"What's wrong?" Catherine asked as she entered the living room.

"All of these powers I have, and I always seem to be too slow or too late. If I had learned how to use my gift sooner, or if I'd been more disciplined about trying to figure out what my visions meant, maybe I wouldn't always fail at everything." His jaw was set in a firm line, his body tense with rage and frustration.

Catherine sat beside him. "You're not failing. You've done nothing to let me down, and I believe that you're doing the best you're capable of doing. If you hadn't told me about my father when you did, we would have never made it here in time. Another five minutes and he would have been dead for sure."

The whiskey glinted in the light as he swirled it around the bottom of his glass. "I'm not used to feeling like a failure."

"You are not a failure," she told him. "You're the man I love, and you're the only one I trust to help me stop this evil from ruining our lives."

"My father, you mean."

"Yes, your father. There's no way around it, Anthony. You're going to have to fight him before this is over, and I think it's best you start preparing yourself mentally now."

"I don't know if I can do it. I don't know if I'll be strong enough."

"You don't have to know it," Catherine said. "I know it well enough for both of us."
