Seventeen-year-old Jesse Trahan is deeply in love. And she's gotten herself pregnant, but the baby's father declares right away that he has no intention of marrying her, and as a matter of fact wants nothing more to do with her. With a broken heart, Jesse runs to her parents hoping to be comforted, but instead of finding sympathy and support, her horrified parents insist that she have an abortion right away to get rid of the baby before the whole town finds out and ruins their reputation. However, that's the last thing on Jesse's mind.

When she refuses to go to the abortion clinic with her mom the next day, all hell breaks loose and insults and threats fly, but Jesse remains firm. Her parents, furious, order her to pack a suitcase. If she insists on keeping the baby, they say, she will need to make her own way in life without their help.

Sad, heartbroken, terrified of the future, Jesse sets out into the big world with a small rolling suitcase and a minute amount of cash. She might be homeless, but she's determined to survive. She will finish her studies, she promises herself, and she will fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a doctor. So, she takes the first bus to Houston. She has kept the address of a long-lost aunt who was once kind to her. But her hopes are dashed when she finds out on her arrival thatmysteriouslythe aunt has vanished.

Jesse is devastated. She has nowhere to go. She has no-one to turn to. But fate is generous to her for once, and she finds sanctuary in a kind-hearted woman's home, in a neighborhood where strangers will one day become friends. There, she pursues her studies and waits for the right moment to go back to her hometown with her daughter, to exact vengeance on the people who have wronged her.

But revenge is not always as sweet as they say. Her homecoming has set the town buzzing and has opened old wounds that never had a chance to heal. When Jesse finds herself having to choose between the man she's always loved and the possibility of a better life far away from home, she must make her choice carefully. After all, she has her child's well-being to consider now as well.
