Whina Cooper (Te Rarawa) found a role as a pan-tribal Mori leader from the 1950s. She was the foundation president of the Mori Women's Welfare League, but is best known for leading the famous 1975 land march from Te Hpua (in the far north) to Parliament in Wellington.
