He had been running for a long time.
Jimmy finally dropped down into a pile of leaves beneath an enormous oak tree. The sun was low in the sky now; soon the short autumn day would be over. Jimmy shivered as he burrowed into the leaves. He was wearing only the linen shirt and woolen pants he'd been given six months ago when he'd been bound over to Reverend Willman as an indentured servant, and the material was worn. He'd also grown in those six months, so both his ankles and his wrists stuck out of the cheap garments' openings.
Jimmy's mother had been a streetwalker in London. He'd never known his father; he doubted if his mother knew which of her clients had impregnated her. For nearly fifteen years they'd lived in one flophouse or another, Jimmy's mother plying her trade and Jimmy learning to pick pockets and swipe produces from market stands. They'd manageduntil Jimmy's mother Moll had swiped a hanging purse from a nobleman and been caught and arrested. Jimmy, who had tried to sell the ring inside the pouch, had been arrested as well. Instead of being thrown in prison, however, they'd been shipped to the New World, to work as indentured servants for ten years. But Jimmy's mother had died of a fever aboard ship, so when they landed in Plymouth, Jimmy was alone. Reverend Willman from Salem had bid on him right there on the docksand then Jimmy's nightmare had begun.
Reverend Willman had a farm outside Salem, a wife, and two ugly daughters. He'd been delighted to get free labor in the form of an indentured servant, and in addition to driving Jimmy to utter exhaustion each and every day, the good pastor felt it was his "Christian" duty to beat Satan out of his charge whenever Jimmy did anything that could remotely be considered sinful. This was why Jimmy was running now. That morning after breakfast, Reverend Willman had found Jimmy in the barnbut the young man hadn't been doing his chores. The master of the house caught Jimmy in a empty stall, his britches unbuttoned and his donger out, moaning with pleasure as he frigged himself.
