Excerpt

Explosions of gold magic struck the ground. The war zone shook the earth.
Boom!
Boom! Boom!
Ice cold fear sent shivers down Louvette Blackwood's back. The explosion had erupted in the same spot where she had stood moments before. Tree roots were ripped from the land. Rocks were unearthed. Dirt flew into the sky. Everything was damaged in the aftermath. Louvette staggered from the impact but kept running.
Boom!
Though the power was the color of butterscotch, Louvette saw crimson as it missed her by a couple of inches. Rage flared in her, sending her pulse into an unsteady canter. She was like a newborn pup running for the first time. Louvette struggled not to let the rage win. She needed to keep a cool mind in this fight. The stakes were too high.
Worry followed by steel resolve hardened her will. Though she faced danger in the attacks, she managed to get her heartbeat steady. She dodged behind a cluster of rocks as she waited for the coast to be clear once again. Louvette leaned over, hands on her knees, gasping for breath. The enemy was giving her such a run for her money.
Several more booms alerted her it was still not safe to go. Her heart boomed in sequence with the blasts of magic.
Silence had won this war. The adrenaline in her veins kicked into overdrive.
It wasn't over yet.
Hesitating, she scrambled behind some brush. They scraped against her smooth skin as she leaned into them. However, hiding wasn't going to win her any battles. Louvette took a deep breath, forcing the fragrance of pine trees to into her lungs, and then she shifted.
Bones broke, skin transformed, and thick fur grew in place of the fine hair follicles. Louvette bent over, not trusting herself to shift on the fly in a war zone. She could be showy when she had to be, but this was not the time or place for such antics.
White paws tore the earth as she darted. Louvette was on the small side as far as Lupines went, so she had the advantage of being faster than most. She was more than happy to use such advantage.
Louvette charged the field with the enhanced speed her wolf gave her. The air grew hot as two more blasts vibrated above her, trying to eliminate her, but she was too fast. One hit came down in front of her. With only seconds to react, she swerved, maneuvered, and was back on track. She had one objective today, and people were counting on her to make this happen.
The command center, a large camo tent, stood tall like it knew it was safe, hiding behind the enemy line. The desire to rip into the fabric of the tent with her canines infused her. Louvette's wolf snarled at the challenge, legs pumping faster. The trees flashed in her peripheral vision as their branches whipped her.
Bullets whirled by her as someone tried to take her out, but it was to no avail. Luck had chosen Louvette today.
The target came into view. Her ticker palpated at the promise of it. She was so close to ending this, the very taste of victory flooded her mouth. It was tangy, and satisfying.
Louvette slowed as she neared the clearing. Objects of the earth weren't the only things standing between her and victory. A vehicle was parked beside the tent, but as for what was waiting for her, the angle left her in the dark. Keeping a wary eye on the truck, Louvette padded toward the tent. The air in her peripheral vision pulsated, and her hackles rose at the danger.
The illusion of emptiness broke, revealing her enemies. She was not alone.
