A letter from an old client brings private detectives Faviel and Gray to Gisborne Priory. The lady of the house, Maie Van Erith, is convinced that her life is in danger. Initially sceptical, the pair soon discover that every member of the house party has something to hide, and that something decidedly fishy is afoot at the Priory. But when a murder is committed, it is not Mrs. Van Erith who is the victim. With a house full of secrets and a police inspector intent on treating Faviel and Gray as suspects in the investigation, the pair have their work cut out to discover the truth.
Originally published in 1932, this is a classic golden age murder mystery by John Haslette Vahey, who also wrote as Vernon Loder.
