"WOMEN IN THE SCRUB; Long Days and Hard Work, is a historical fiction about Florida cracker women, in the late 1800s. Maude Elsie Tanner and Spurgeon Tanner ran the stagecoach line that brought passengers, mail and the Wells Fargo strong box from Ft. Cummins to the Bent Penny ranch, to the stage depot at Tanners settlement where Spurgeon and Maude Elsie also ran a general store. The final leg of the stagecoach was through Bartow and terminated at Tampa. The depot was the wayside inn for the traveler who was on the stagecoach, horse and buggy, buckboard wagon, afoot, or on horse back. Rooms were rented, food was served boarding house style. Other women became part of the Tanner settlement. Savannah Ford who was a good nurse as well as a wonderful cook. Nadine who gave birth to triplets, Tomega who was an Indian wet nurse for the triplets. The story flows, and life carried on, with the help of all the guests and friends through happiness and sadness, the years move forward, balanced and waiting for the world of the Florida scrub to create the next big surprise. This work has mystery, romance, child birth and gun fights, and guileful Seminole Indian women. The vernacular of the old cracker dialog is prevalent that makes an interesting read. The primitive conditions are countered with strong determination and will. They would eventually create a land where folks such as these independent pioneers, made the lives of the future settlers more bearable through taming the rugged Florida frontier. So with hard work and a bit of luck these WOMEN IN THE SCRUB; Long Days and Hard Work, were exemplary in grubbing an existence for the cracker cowboy, to make the scrub less miserable and kept the lamp burning in the window for him to come home, even late at night."
