In the training fields of the Empyre, Zaciah oversees the Eager, novice warriors honing their skills. Zaciah notices Seventeen's error as the training progresses and calls him out. When Seventeen challenges Zaciah's authority, a duel ensues, resulting in Seventeen's death. Troubled by the necessity of killing, Zaciah seeks solace in a brothel but encounters two soldiers who question his methods. Later, Zaciah's childhood friend, Atzi, confronts him, and a tense exchange ends with Zaciah sparing Atzi's life to uphold Empyral law.
